 Information about Residential Services

Residential Services

Residential staff  assist men and women who have an intellectual disability to find suitable accommodations and the supports necessary to maintain a safe, comfortable and fulfilling life. Individuals may live in small groups, alone in their own house or apartment, with friends or family, in a second-level lodging home or in a group home.  They may also reside with a host family.

Supports may be provided on a 24 hour a day basis or less frequently depending on the needs of the individual.  Working in a partnership with the consumer, their families, neighbours, friends, other professionals and other interested parties, Residential Services staff assist in the development of a network of supporters around the client.  This network is coordinated through a person-centred, consumer-driven service plan which respects the wishes, abilities, strengths and needs of the individual.

Staff act as case managers and teach a wide variety of skills.  Consumers may choose to learn skills which will:

  • Increase their independence in the activities of daily living
  • Iimprove their ability to communicate
  • Develop their social, recreational and leisure skills
  • Advance their academic abilities
  • Help them to manage their financial resources
  • Assist them to become more involved in the life of our community

Every effort is made to find the best residential setting for each person.  New ideas and options are constantly being explored.
